Summer and Sunday, the ideal preconditions for urban sketching in the centre of Vienna. Two very different but beautiful buildings are located near each other. When designing the Karlskirche (St. Charles Church) in 1714 Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach was obviously influenced by Rome and Byzantium. For the columns (modelled after the Trajan’s Column in Rome) I only made a light set up and then went straight to watercolour. I get braver and braver.
The sketch only shows a part of the middle part of this splendid church because I was sitting near the Otto Wagner-Pavillon. Today this masterpiece of Art Nouveau is part of the Wien Museum. But it was erected in 1898 as a station building for the urban railway.
